Shandon’s Royal Canal ecology 2022

In 2022, Shandon Residents Association were delighted to win funding from the Local Authority Waters Programme for an aquatic ecology survey of the Shandon segment of the historic Royal Canal. Freshwater biology expert Ross Macklin and his team discovered an endangered mollusc Glutinous Snail (Myxas glutinosa) at Lock 6 and a rare water plant, the Clustered Stonewort (Tolypella glomerata)

The survey set a baseline for this segment of the canal that will be very useful to help protect the health of our local urban wildlife. Ross has a great knowledge of Royal Canal otter populations having previously produced a detailed survey for Dublin City Council. He has previously seen signs near Broombridge Station where there is a suspected holt.

The Shandon Royal Canal ecology survey was completed by late 2022 and you can access the full report here. It also includes great recommendations of ways to enhance local biodiversity.
